Updating Coastline Data

The National Coastal Change Database for Aotearoa New Zealand was completed and made publicly available in Aug 2024.

We would like to partner with Government agencies, Councils and Consultancies to continue to update the dataset and maintain its integrity.

The dataset is nationally consistent and has been collected using a consistent, robust and repeatable methodology. It should form an important component of all future coastal hazard assessments.

There are a small number of gaps in the data set that need to be filled, and future coastal hazard assessments will require regular updates.

Please reach out to us to collaborate on completing and updating the dataset.

This map is based on historical coastal positions interpreted from aerial photographs and satellite images. The map depicts rates of coastal change (erosion and accretion) at 10 m increments around most of the open coast. The rate of change is subject to errors associated with image quality, image processing, and interpretation of the coastline. The rate of change is an estimate only and subject to uncertainty. We make no representations or warranties or guarantees as to the accuracy of the data, the map, or any other content.
